Aurivillius compound SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT) is a futuristic material with applications mainly in ferroelectric memory devices. This is due to their excellent fatigue resistance and other electrical properties. Most importantly, all the constituents of parent material and/or by modifications, as a whole are environmentally safe. Here, we presented the various physical properties such as structural, surface morphology, electrical and photocatalytic analysis of SBT and its substitutions (Ce4+, Dy3+ and Y3+). Substitutions at A-site and Bi-layer effectively modifies the electrical properties as well as photocatalytic analysis. Trivalent elemental substitutions at A-site induce cation vacancies to satisfy the charge neutrality, which significantly improves the ferroelectric property. The various functions are used to analyze the electrical parameters. Finally, the photogenerated electrons and holes are separated spontaneously by ferroelectric domains to enhance the H2/O2 evolution. For a better understanding of ferroelectric as a photocatalyst, the relation between electrical and photocatalytic properties are correlated.

Relaxor-based ferroelectric single crystal solid solution (1-x) Pb (Zn1/3Nb2/3) O3-xPbTiO3, abbreviated (1-x) PZN-x PT, binary system with compositions near a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) have attracted much attention for applications in high performance actuator, non-destructive testing and ultrasonic devices, making use of its superior piezoelectric properties . 0.91Pb (Zn1/3Nb2/3) O3-0.09PbTiO3 (91PZN-9PT) single crystal exhibits excellent piezoelectric constant (d33~2500pC/N) and high electromechanical coupling coefficient (k33~94%) in the rhombohedral(R) phase in engineered domain state. A pure compound, lead titanate, can display a MPB under pressure.The electric field-induced domain wall movement and the high-density domain walls associated with the nanotwin related domains to have a significant contribution to the superior piezoelectric properties near the MPB. In this book, the electric field-induced switching of nanotwin related domains was investigated in 91PZN-9PT single crystals by scanning force microscopy in the piezoresponse mode (PFM).

One of the fascinating aspects of the field of ferroelectric ceramics is its interdisciplinary nature. This aspect is also a source of difficulty for the people working in the field. In a successful team of ferroelectricians the physics theoretician must understand the sintering technologist, the electrical engineer has to communicate with the crystallographer, the organic chemist will interact with the microelectronics engineer, the electron microscopist should collaborate with the systems engineer. It was the purpose of the summer school on ferroelectric ceramics that took place at the Centro Stefano Franscini (ETHZ), Monte VeritA, Ascona, Switzerland, in September 1991 to help to build bridges between people from the different disciplines and to draw for them, in the form of tutorial lectures, some of the different facets of ferroelectrics. The book is a written version of this summer school. It contains the following subjects: ferroelectric materials, physics of ferroelectrics, thin films, processing of ferroelectrics and their applications. It represents a cross section of topics of current interest. Materials are presented (L. E. Cross) from the point of view of the user, i. e. the tailoring of materials for specific applications. Two reviews address the important topic of ferroelectric domains and domain walls (I. Fousek and H. Schmid). In the part devoted to theory, three subjects of current interest are presented: phase transition in thin films (D. R. Tilley), weak ferroelectrics (A. K. Tagantsev) and dielectric losses (A. K. Tagantsev).

This works deals with two problems in the mechanicsof active materials with long-range interactions.Classical PDE continuum models of active materialsare not closed, and require nucleation and kineticinformation or regularization as additionalconstitutive input. We examine this problem in theperidynamic formulation, a nonlocal continuum modelthat uses integral equations to account forlong-range forces that are important at small scales,and allows resolution of the structure of interfaces.We then consider the design of ferroelectricoptoelectronic circuit elements. Free surfaces andelectrodes on these devices generate electricalfields that must be resolved over all space. Thesefields enhance the role of geometry in theelectromechanical response of these materials, andgive rise to strong size and shape dependence. Wedescribe a computational method that transforms thisproblem into a local setting in an accurate andefficient manner. We apply it to three examples:closure domains, a ferroelectric slab with segmentedelectrodes and a notch subjected toelectro-mechanical loading.

The recent restriction on the use of lead in electric and electronic equipment is driving the interest for new ferroelectric materials that can substitute the widely used PZT. The recent discovery of very interesting properties in the morphotropic phase boundary of potassium sodium niobate (KNN) has triggered many investigations about the synthesis and properties of this family. This work aims at one common feature this important class of materials, the ferroelectric domains. The piezoresponse force microscopy is a powerful tool for the characterization of the domain structure and it is the main technique used in this work. The main focus of this work are the experiments about the switching behavior of KNN. The samples were produced with conventional sintering techniques and times set to achieve abnormal grain growth, providing large grains for the characterization of the domain structure. An interesting nanoindentation result of the microscopic mechanical properties of the KNN material is also presented.
