Handbook of Research and Practice in Heritage L...

This volume covers the multidimensional and international field of Heritage Language Education, including concepts, practices, and the correlation between culture and language from the perspectives of pedagogy and research. Heritage Language Learning is a new dimension in both the linguistic and pedagogic sciences, and is linked to processes of identity negotiation and cultural inheritance. It is a distinct pedagogical and curricular domain that is not exhausted within the domains of bilingualism and second or foreign language education. A heritage language is not a second or foreign language, it is the vehicle whereby cultural memory is transmitted over time, across distances, communities, and generations. Heritage languages play an important role ensuring the balance between coherence and pluralism in contemporary societies that have come to realize that diversity is an advantage for social, cultural, and economic reasons. The volume includes topics like First Nation indigenous languages, languages in diaspora, immigrant and minority languages, and contributions from North, central and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. It addresses the social, linguistic, and cultural issues in educational contexts in a new way by taking up questions of globalization, difference, community, identity, democracy, ethics, politics, technology, language rights and cultural policies through the evolving field of Heritage Language Education.

Internationalisation of Higher Education in Sou...

This book is an empirical account of how students experience and conceptualise internationalisation of higher education at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. The conceptual framework presents the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) within three domains- the official, pedagogical and social- as the context within which the university operates. Adopting phenomenography as the research approach, four main constructs on internationalisation emerged from students' accounts. This book argues that, though students converge to four constructs, their difference on the emphasis and significance points to a scenario of unbalanced institutional mediation with strong mediation within the logic of the dominant pedagogical practice within the university constrained by forms of weak mediation in the social domain.

Enabling Gender Equality

To challenge gender discrimination and to secure the world's prosperity and peace, we urgently need pro-girls and pro-women policies in the contemporary, globally developing world. Such policies could mark an era of building greater gender equality across the world by sheltering domains of women's well-being that are shown to decline. These needs can be best summarized by Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations in 2005: 'When women are fully involved, the benefits can be seen immediately: families are healthier, they are better fed, their income, savings and reinvestment go up. And what is true for families is true of communities and, eventually, of whole countries.' The desperately needed gender equality would honor women's place in the world, would greatly honor each country's political constituencies and enrich democratic institutions. This volume of Research in Political Sociology addresses a broad range of gender equality issues from women's status and opportunities at work, education, health, political participation, community involvement and global migration; from a vast domain of countries in Europe, America, Australia, Asia and Africa.

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the eighth edition of the ACM Conference on Data and Application Security and Privacy (CODASPY 2018), which follows the successful seven editions held in February/March 2011-2017. This conference series has been founded to foster novel and exciting research in this arena and to help generate new directions for further research and development. The initial concept was established by the two co-founders, Elisa Bertino and Ravi Sandhu, and sharpened by subsequent discussions with a number of fellow cyber security researchers. Their enthusiastic encouragement persuaded the co-founders to move ahead with the always daunting task of creating a high-quality conference. Data and applications that manipulate data are crucial assets in today's information age. With the increasing drive towards availability of data and services anytime and anywhere, security and privacy risks have increased. Vast amounts of privacy-sensitive data are being collected today by organizations for a variety of reasons. Unauthorized disclosure, modification, usage or denial of access to these data and corresponding services may result in high human and financial costs. New applications such as social networking and social computing provide value by aggregating input from numerous individual users and the mobile devices they carry. The emerging area of Internet of Things also poses serious privacy and security challenges. To achieve efficiency and effectiveness in traditional domains such as healthcare, there is a drive to make these records electronic and highly available. The need for organizations to share information effectively is underscored by rapid innovations in the business world that require close collaboration across traditional boundaries. Security and privacy in these and other arenas can be meaningfully achieved only in context of the application domain. Data and applications security and privacy has rapidly expanded as a research field with many important challenges to be addressed. In response to the call for papers of CODASPY 2018, 110 papers were submitted from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and North America. The program committee selected 23 full-length research papers (20.9% acceptance rate). These papers cover a variety of topics, including security issues in web, cloud, IoT, and mobile devices, privacy, access control, authentication, malware, code analysis, and hardware and system security. The program committee also selected 12 short papers for presentation. The program includes a poster paper session presenting exciting work in progress. The program is complemented by three keynote speeches by Christian Collberg, Ninghui Li and Brad Wardman. This year's edition also features three workshops: the International Workshop on Security and Privacy Analytics, the ACM International Workshop on Security in Software Defined Networks & Network Function Virtualization, and the ACM Workshop on Attribute-Based Access Control.

Party Systems and Cleavage Structures in Southe...

For the interaction of society and political parties within the electoral system in southern Africa, it is necessary to systematically investigate the social structures (cleavage analysis) and measure the success or failure of political parties against the backdrop of the election programmes (manifesto research). The focus of this research is the six polyarchies of Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia and South Africa. In countries with the voting system of proportional representation, neither coalition governments nor alternative government parties have ruled since 1990. In countries with a majoritarian voting system, either coalitions have formed a government, or one party has remained unchallenged for decades. The research results show that the previous electoral outcomes are the reflection of the cleavage structure, and there are indicators in the societies examined that can meet the theoretical expectations of democratic societies in the future. In part I, the theoretical framework for the cleavage analysis and party analysis is established, which applies for the six case studies of part II. The societies are examined in terms of eight cleavages, their extension and their political relevance. The cleavages are related to the settlement area, the occupation, the income distribution, the religion, the ethnicity (race), the language heritage, the educational level and citizenship (the proportion of foreigners). In the context of the electoral system, political parties represent the social interest. Their goals are recorded as contents of the manifesto, which can be used for Wordscores to compare the political parties on the policy domains Freedom and democracy, Political system, Economy, Welfare and quality of life, Fabric of Society and Social Groups. Each domain is described by two contrasting definitions, which are used for aggregating Left-Right categorisation of the parties. The regional results in the comparative study (part III) define the categories Left, Right and Liberal of political parties. The qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) is used to define the content of the left-wing, right-wing and liberal political parties in the context of Southern Africa. At the same time, the contents of the definitions are factors in the success of parties in Southern Africa. Parties with right-wing content are found mainly among the government parties, and parties with politically left-wing or liberal content are mainly opposition parties.
