The self-organizing map (SOM) is an unsupervised learning algorithm which has been successfully applied to various applications. In the last several decades, there have been variants of SOM used in many application domains. In this work, two new SOM algorithms are developed for image quantization and compression. The first algorithm is a sample-size adaptive SOM algorithm that can be used for color quantization of images to adapt to the variations of network parameters and training sample size. Based on the sample-size adaptive self-organizing map, we use the sampling ratio of training data, rather than the conventional weight change between adjacent sweeps, as a stop criterion. As a result, it can significantly speed up the learning process. The second algorithm is a novel classified SOM method for edge preserving quantization of images using an adaptive subcodebook and weighted learning rate. The subcodebook sizes of two classes are automatically adjusted in training iterations that can be estimated incrementally. The proposed weighted learning rate updates the neuron efficiently no matter how large the weighting factor is.

Sports video analysis is a common tool in team sports. It requires keeping track of player positions with corresponding identities during the game and analyzing the resulting trajectories at an abstract level. This thesis proposes a distributed cognitive system for automating this task. The tracking process includes information fusion and building as well as adapting models of the tracked players online, the system supports automated team behavior summarization and offers further analysis in a conceptualization framework. Our contributions are (1) an innovative, general multi-target tracking approach that outperforms current state-of-the-art algorithms, (2) adaptive methods for identifying players based on appearance and/or spatial relations with the help of extended self-organizing neural networks, and (3) the implementation of a concrete real-time tracking system for recorded soccer games. Research results are validated in various challenging domains, including full-length soccer match videos and broadcasted material.

After exploring these systems, the focus of the research was to understand the systems and features required for making information security systems learn to adapt to the changing environments. Designing and testing the adaptive framework were the next steps. The acquired knowledge from this research was structured into domains in accordance to ontological principles and relationship between domains was studied. These domains were then integrated with the security value-based chain concept, which include deterrence, prevention, detection, response, and recovery functions to create a framework for adaptive information security systems.
