This book presents carefully selected contributions devoted to the modern perspective of AI research and innovation. This collection covers several areas of applications and motivates new research directions. The theme across all chapters combines several domains of AI research, Computational Intelligence and Machine Intelligence including an introduction to the recent research and models. Each of the subsequent chapters reveals leading edge research and innovative solution that employ AI techniques with an applied perspective. The problems include classification of spatial images, early smoke detection in outdoor space from video images, emergent segmentation from image analysis, intensity modification in images, multi-agent modeling and analysis of stress. They all are novel pieces of work and demonstrate how AI research contributes to solutions for difficult real world problems that benefit the research community, industry and society.

Self-Concept and Adventure Education

With the goal of educating the whole student, including a student s self-concept, schools are searching for and initiating programs and activities to enhance self-concept, especially with adolescents. Many of these programs are offered through outdoor adventure education activities in the context of traditional academic settings such as high schools and colleges. These programs have used a number of approaches based on several theoretical models that affect self-concept, and research studying the outcomes of these programs has reported mixed results. Outdoor adventure education programs use experiential activities such as backpacking, rock climbing, canoeing, and other outdoor recreation activities to achieve various goals and objectives. This study examined the changes in self-concept of adolescents enrolled in outdoor adventure education courses offered at a traditional college preparatory high school and explored how gender influenced changes in specific domains of self-concept.

Exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is an occupational health and safety issue for outdoor occupations, since excessive exposure is associated with negative health outcomes, including eye conditions, and skin cancers. In this study, electronic dosimeters were used to record time-stamped UVR exposure of a convenience sample of 77 workers from three occupations: building, horticulture, and roading, selected from listings in Central Otago yellow pages directories. Workers kept a diary record of concurrent sun-protective practices and completed a questionnaire on sun-related knowledge, attitudes towards suntans, and perceptions of workplace socio-cultural environment. The two outcomes were UVR exposure and sun-protective practices.Using the Haddon Matrix and Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion to structure and guide the research, variables potentially associated with the outcomes were considered from the host (worker) and the socio-cultural environment (workplace) domains. Host factors included (1) sun and skin cancer related knowledge, (2) attitudes towards suntans, and (3) perceived risk of skin cancer..

This book describes cutting-edge applications of human factors for sport and outdoor recreation disciplines and provides practical guidance on a range of methods for describing, representing, and evaluating human, team, and system performance in sports domains. Contributions in this book show how various human factors methods, applied historically in the complex safety critical domains, are suited to describing and understanding sports performance and sports injury prevention. The book discusses a wealth of methods for different purposes, such as data collection, task analysis (including cognitive task analysis), workload measurement, assessing situation awareness, performance assessment (including team performance assessment), decision making and cognition in sports, human error identification, and interface evaluation methods. With respect to other publications in human factors and ergonomics, which have been more focused on the biomechanical, physiological, environmental, and equipment-related aspects of sports performance, this book gives a special emphasis to research on analysis of individual and team sports, cognitive and social human factors, and covers both sports and outdoor recreation disciplines. Based on the AHFE 2016 International Conference on Human Factors in Sports and Outdoor Recreation, held on July 27-31, 2016, in Walt Disney World®, Florida, USA, this book provides readers with a timely survey of new methods that can be implemented during any sport or outdoor recreation event for analyzing and improving the performance and safety of both individuals and teams.

Aims and Experience in Outdoor Education

This study explores the lived experience of seven, ten to twelve year old students in the outdoor education programme at Somers School Camp. It relates teacher expectations as recorded in programme aims, to the aims of students as revealed in interviews. Aims in outdoor education are examined in the light of a framework developed from Dewey's writings, focussing on his notion of general and immediate aims. It also highlights the importance of the nature of aims, the context in which they operate and the methods they suggest. The aims examined are those developed at the Dartington conference in the UK in 1975, and those of Somers School Camp. The content of these aims is also examined against the background of broad educational expectations in the domains of personal and social development, and environmental education. This book should be useful to outdoor education professionals, and educators in general, who are looking to develop or refine aims which are able to fulfil their role - to give guiding purpose to their programmes and to the student experience.

Ambient Intelligence (AmI) is an integrating technology for supporting a pervasive and transparent infrastructure for implementing smart environments. Such technology is used to enable environments for detecting events and behaviors of people and for responding in a contextually relevant fashion. AmI proposes a multi-disciplinary approach for enhancing human machine interaction. Ambient Intelligence: A Novel Paradigm is a compilation of edited chapters describing current state-of-the-art and new research techniques including those related to intelligent visual monitoring, face and speech recognition, innovative education methods, as well as smart and cognitive environments. The authors start with a description of the iDorm as an example of a smart environment conforming to the AmI paradigm, and introduces computer vision as an important component of the system. Other computer vision examples describe visual monitoring for the elderly, classic and novel surveillance techniques using clusters of cameras installed in indoor and outdoor application domains, and the monitoring of public spaces. Face and speech recognition systems are also covered as well as enhanced LEGO blocks for novel educational purposes. The book closes with a provocative chapter on how a cybernetic system can be designed as the backbone of a human machine interaction. TOC:Introduction.- Towards Ambient Intelligence for the Domestic Care of the Elderly.- Scaling Ambient Intelligence: Compositional Devices.- Video and Radio Attributes Extraction for Heterogeneous Location Estimation: A Context-based Ambient Intelligence Architecture.- Distributed Active Multicamera Networks.- A Distributed Multiple Camera Surveillance System.- Learning and Integrating Information from Multiple Camera Views: Mapping an Ambient Environment.- Fast Online Speaker Adaptation for Smart Room Applications.- Stero-based 3D Face Recognition System for AMI.- Security and Building Intelligence: From People Detection to Action Analysis.- Sustainable Cybernetics Systems: Backbones of Ambient Intelligent Environments.
